TOUR DESCRIPTION
On this food & cultural walking small group tour, we will feel and taste real Portuguese food by exploring the oldest part of Lisbon (the Alfama and Mouraria neighborhoods) and by visiting the most famous monument in Lisbon, a medieval fortification, the São Jorge Castle.
This tour starts with some delicious petiscos (it’s the Portuguese name for tapas) in a hidden place in the downtown. The downtown district was damaged by the 1755 earthquake, and was rebuilt as a grid with beautiful squares, like the Rossio square and Praça do Comércio.
After that, we will head to Mouraria (the old Moorish neighborhood), the most multicultural area of the city. It’s the right spot to taste the Indian and African influence in our cuisine. The Moors arrived in Lisbon in the early 8th century, but they were forced to live in a different part of Lisbon after 1147.
Then it is time to give food a little break and visit the São Jorge Castle (10€ ticket is included). It’s the most visited monument in Portugal and a famous medieval and well-protected fortification. You’ll have a guided visit and the opportunity to enjoy outstanding views over Lisbon and the river Tejo (Tagus).
After this, let’s get lost in the narrow streets of Alfama and taste more genuine Portuguese food. Alfama is the soul of Lisbon, a magical place with hidden courtyards, pitched rooftops and labyrinthine alleyways.
On this tour we favor local restaurants, because the food is real and made with love, and we are supporting small local businesses. We’ll have 10 tastings and 4 drinks (wine included of course!), so come hungry and enjoy this fusion of food, culture and history.
