Setubal wine tasting (private tour)
From Lisbon we will cross the Tagus River south by passing the Portuguese Golden Gate Bridge, formally called the Salazar Bridge during the fascist dictatorship. At the end of the bridge you will have the opportunity to see how big the statue of Christ is (it was erected in 1959 to thank God for sparing Portugal from the horrors of World War II)!
We will head south to the wine region of Azeitao. Here you will visit the oldest cellar of the region, which has been in the same family for more than 7 generations. You will learn how they make the wine and taste (of course!) the oldest bottled wine in Portugal and the marvelous Moscatel.
After the tasting is time to go to the fishing town of Sesimbra. Originally from the 12th century, it is now famous for fresh fish and wonderful beaches. Here we will visit the medieval and originally Arab Castle of Sesimbra that stands in a dominant position overlooking a cliff, and it offers the best view of the village and the ocean.
It is time for lunch, and Sesimbra offers excellent seafood in its waterfront restaurants. However, the best option is to go to the oldest fish restaurant, owned by generations of fishermen. This will be the most authentic experience that you will have in Portugal, and we will enjoy it together (lunch costs not included). It’s all uniformly delicious.
After, we will cross the astonishing Arrabida Mountain. This is a protected (Arrabida Natural Park) area rich in Mediterranean plants- from olives, pistachios and strawberries, to lavender, thyme and chamomile. Always close to the sea, we will pass by some amazing beaches with azure waters where you enjoy the remarkable views.
To end the day, and since it’s because of the wine that we are here, we will head to a small local family owned cellar in the middle of the peaceful Arrabida Mountain to learn more about how this precious nectar is made. You will see the vineyards, see how the process is completed and of course, taste the results.
Finally, it is time to go back to Lisbon.
All of this takes place in the company of a local guide, and is done in a relaxed and informal way. We only work with small groups (sorry, but we don’t like big groups). This is not recommended for regular tourists, and we provide secrets to the city that we only share with you!
